The recent #EndGenderBias survey has revealed that two-thirds of women feel dismissed, judged, or ignored when seeking reproductive and general health care.
Last week, the National Women’s Health Advisory Council released a comprehensive report detailing these findings, highlighting the pervasive gender bias in health care. The report underscores the importance of gender as a significant determinant of health that must be considered when addressing discrimination in health care and health inequities.
The Australian Women’s Health Alliance, as the national voice on women’s health, plays a crucial role in this effort, with initiatives such as the Women’s Health Hub funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care.
Australian Women’s Health Alliance Chair, Bonney Corbin says: ‘Thank you to all the women and gender diverse people who spoke out, striving for a better health system that works for all people in Australia.
‘Amplifying the experiences of women and gender diverse people is essential to understanding and addressing bias and discrimination.
‘The end gender bias survey demonstrates the need for vital investment in the National Women’s Health Strategy to deliver on 2030 commitments. We must build workforce capacity to embed gender-responsive approaches throughout Australian health systems.
‘At a time that women’s rights are under threat globally, Australia must take a lead in gender-responsive health,’ she says.
