Thought Leadership Brief – Cardiovascular Health: The Silent Killer of Women

Cardiovascular Health: The Silent Killer of Women

The Australian Women’s Health Alliance has published a new policy brief examining women’s cardiovascular health through a gender equity lens and outlining practical actions to improve outcomes for women and gender diverse people across Australia.

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of illness and death among Australian women, accounting for around one in four female deaths in 2022. The burden is even greater for Indigenous women, highlighting the urgent need for equitable, culturally safe prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Our brief identifies 5 key areas for action:

  1. improving awareness of sex-specific symptoms
  2. closing gaps in investigation and treatment
  3. strengthening research and evidence
  4. enhancing prevention and risk-factor management
  5. ensuring ongoing monitoring and accountability.

With the Ministerial Expert Panel on Women’s Health placing an initial focus on cardiovascular disease, this is an important opportunity to accelerate meaningful change and improve health equity for Australian women.
